This period tends to be understood in three parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Early Middle Ages: roughly, the mid-5th century to the 10th century (400s to 900s, CE)<\/li>\n<li>the High Middle Ages: roughly, the 11th century to the 14th century (1000s to 1300s, CE)<\/li>\n<li>the Late Middle Ages: roughly, the 14th century to the end of the 15th century (1300s to 1500s, CE)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_380\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-380 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cyberspacerobinson.org\/honors-colloquium-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Gorleston20Psalter2C20England2014th20century2028British20Library2C20Add20496222C20fol.20133r29.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"364\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-380\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rabbits, owls, cats, dogs, mice, monkeys, snails, and other animals were common in medieval manuscript illustrations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The year 1500 tends to be considered the end of the Middle Ages, although some parts of Europe entered the Renaissance period much earlier. 19th century historians tended to refer to the Middle Ages as the \u201cDark Ages\u201d because, after the fall of the Roman Empire, political and religious chaos ensued. By comparison, the Renaissance (which means \u201crebirth\u201d) was a period of reawakening of scientific and artistic exploration, a renewed interest in classical Greek and Roman learning. There was an explosion of artistic, scientific, creative, logical thought, and exploration. The Renaissance marks a time of exploration, conquest (the practice of taking control of a government by another country, usually by military force) and\/or colonialism (the practice of one country or group exploiting the people and resources of another country for an indefinite period of time). By comparison, the Middle Ages were a \u201cquieter\u201d time, a time of\u00a0 \u201crest\u201d.\u00a0<strong>This does not at all mean that there wasn\u2019t intellectual and creative growth during the Middle Ages<\/strong>\u2014for example, the university is an institution originated from the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2WHwZ2Ea9vM?si=h24qfuLc2XSXR12b\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nBasics of Medieval Philosophy<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"feudalism\"><strong>Feudalism<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The dominant social system in medieval Europe, in which the nobility<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-379 \" src=\"https:\/\/cyberspacerobinson.org\/honors-colloquium-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/The-Breviary-of-Renaud-de-Bar-Killer-Rabbits.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"485\" \/>\u00a0held lands from the crown (typically, a king) in exchange for military service, and\u00a0<span class=\"AraNOb\"><a class=\"rMNQNe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=62c7954774bbe2d8&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS769US769&amp;q=vassals&amp;si=ACC90nwUEXg6u2vxy-araGkF9MAxibFGgwB27rATWwP_CcsU5YWaBomI07nQW0WVzm0zCvnFmMq37UjC_aLhIzD1NWrd3unBYsrb2v99B9gSlI8RRRW-Gjc%3D&amp;expnd=1&amp;sa=X&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiT6dK3hemKAxWEw_ACHS9FKzEQyecJegQIRxAO\">vassals<\/a><\/span>\u00a0were in turn tenants of the\u00a0nobles, while the\u00a0peasants\u00a0(<span class=\"AraNOb\"><a class=\"rMNQNe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=62c7954774bbe2d8&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS769US769&amp;q=villeins&amp;si=ACC90nx67Z8g0WkBmnrPB4IqtqGv-W5rVYdqWxkSiN4IlZkq_WKQw-aNW-ydQLKkvV-E3gB8BvSGHDgNqguws4FobYMwSIp0e2spJ__kUWJgyiBPNBgbmY4%3D&amp;expnd=1&amp;sa=X&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiT6dK3hemKAxWEw_ACHS9FKzEQyecJegQIRxAP\">villeins<\/a><\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<span class=\"AraNOb\"><a class=\"rMNQNe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=62c7954774bbe2d8&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS769US769&amp;q=serfs&amp;si=ACC90nyrPgcbTBsFIq03NzrKCa0gJDB8hrqAIOaeXvgJvppCDqfyoKhhPrJli4ta5ufPXolkmhizgqUSfeRgv6Cvwju6OsKc0Q%3D%3D&amp;expnd=1&amp;sa=X&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiT6dK3hemKAxWEw_ACHS9FKzEQyecJegQIRxAQ\">serfs<\/a><\/span>) were obliged to live on their lord\u2019s land and give him homage, labor, and a share of the produce, notionally in exchange for military protection.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"antifeminism\"><strong>Antifeminism<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The belief that women are not equal to men, that women are a lesser \u201cother\u201d to men. The writings of St. Jerome both reflected and influence\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womenpriests.org\/theology\/barr-the-influence-of-saint-jerome-on-medieval-attitudes-to-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medieval attitudes toward women<\/a>. St. Jerome (c. 342-347 CE) is perhaps best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin, a text that became known as the Vulgate. In about 389 CE, he established a monastery in what was then Bethlehem, Paletine. His writings greatly influenced values and thoughts held in the European Middle Ages. He is considered to be the patron saint of librarians, translators, scholars, archaeologists, and encyclopedists.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mysticism\"><strong>Mysticism<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Christian mystics were important during the European Middle Ages; a mystic was considered to be special\u2014holy, wise, elite. Mystical experiences were considered to be a unique, yet secret, means of becoming closer to God, bringing about greater religious knowledge and spirituality. The term \u201cmysticism\u201d is derived from an ancient Greek word (m\u00fa\u014d), meaning \u201cto conceal\u201d or \u201cto close\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"chivalry\"><strong>Chivalry<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is a religious, moral, and social code of behavior for medieval knights.<\/p>\n<ul data-hveid=\"CCgQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwi23fe_neaKAxUSKFkFHS1WAlAQm_YKegQIKBAB\">\n<li>oaths of loyalty (in this order) to:\n<ul>\n<li>God<\/li>\n<li>King<\/li>\n<li>Fair Lady<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>the importance of\n<ul>\n<li>faith<\/li>\n<li>hope<\/li>\n<li>charity<\/li>\n<li>justice<\/li>\n<li>wisdom<\/li>\n<li>honesty<\/li>\n<li>courtesy<\/li>\n<li>humility<\/li>\n<li>valor<\/li>\n<li>generosity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>always protect the weak<\/li>\n<li>rescue damsels in distress<\/li>\n<li>never resist fighting all dragons, evil men, giants, and other monsters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"ascode\"><strong>Medieval Germanic Warrior Code<br \/>\n(Anglo-Saxon Heroic Code)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul data-hveid=\"CCgQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwi23fe_neaKAxUSKFkFHS1WAlAQm_YKegQIKBAB\">\n<li>stoicism, strength, bravery, honor, loyalty, honesty, selflessness, generosity, pride (confidence), fame and glory<\/li>\n<li>a retainer (warrior) holds loyalty to the king (defend to the death)<\/li>\n<li>the king is protected by a body of retainers (most likely family)<\/li>\n<li>the custom of gift-giving and the king as \u201cring-giver\u201d<\/li>\n<li>blood vengeance: a warrior must seek compensation for the death or injury of a kinsman, either through the death of another or with weargild (blood money)<\/li>\n<li>the importance of living forever in story\/history with fame and glory<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0the horror of living forever in story\/history in shame<\/li>\n<li>a boast is not at all a bad thing, if it can be supported<\/li>\n<li>a respect for Wyrd (goddess of fate), and later for God<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_358\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-358\" src=\"https:\/\/cyberspacerobinson.org\/honors-colloquium-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-12-at-12.49.13-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"355\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Wyrd is\u00a0<em>weird<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"love\"><strong>Andreas Capellanus<br \/>\n<\/strong><em><strong>The Art of Courtly Love<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0(c.a. 1170s)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>(This is very secular\u2013the Church did not approve of most of these rules!)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-137 \" src=\"https:\/\/unicorn-castle.org\/earlybritlit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Art-of-Courtly-Love.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unicorn-castle.org\/earlybritlit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Art-of-Courtly-Love.jpg 809w, https:\/\/unicorn-castle.org\/earlybritlit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Art-of-Courtly-Love-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unicorn-castle.org\/earlybritlit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Art-of-Courtly-Love-768x598.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"223\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Marriage is no real excuse for not loving.<\/li>\n<li>He who is not jealous cannot love.<\/li>\n<li>No one can be bound by a double love.<\/li>\n<li>It is well known that love is always increasing or decreasing.<\/li>\n<li>That which a lover takes against his will of his beloved has no relish.<\/li>\n<li>Boys do not love until they arrive at the age of maturity.<\/li>\n<li>When one lover dies, a widowhood of two years is required of the survivor.<\/li>\n<li>No one should be deprived of love without the very best of reasons.<\/li>\n<li>No one can love unless he is impelled by the persuasion of love.<\/li>\n<li>Love is always a stranger in the home of avarice.<\/li>\n<li>It is not proper to love any woman whom one should be ashamed to seek to marry.<\/li>\n<li>A true lover does not desire to embrace in love anyone except his beloved.<\/li>\n<li>When made public love rarely endures.<\/li>\n<li>The easy attainment of love makes it of little value; difficulty of attainment makes it prized.<\/li>\n<li>Every lover regularly turns pale in the presence of his beloved.<\/li>\n<li>When a lover suddenly catches sight of his beloved his heart palpitates.<\/li>\n<li>A new love puts to flight an old one.<\/li>\n<li>Good character alone makes any man worthy of love.<\/li>\n<li>If love diminishes, it quickly fails and rarely revives.<\/li>\n<li>A man in love is always apprehensive.<\/li>\n<li>Real jealousy always increases the feeling of love.<\/li>\n<li>Jealousy, and therefore love, are increased when one suspects his beloved.<\/li>\n<li>He whom the thought of love vexes, eats and sleeps very little.<\/li>\n<li>Every act of a lover ends with in the thought of his beloved.<\/li>\n<li>A true lover considers nothing good except what he thinks will please his beloved.<\/li>\n<li>Love can deny nothing to love.<\/li>\n<li>A lover can never have enough of the solaces of his beloved.<\/li>\n<li>A slight presumption causes a lover to suspect his beloved.<\/li>\n<li>A man who is vexed by too much passion usually does not love.<\/li>\n<li>A true lover is constantly and without intermission possessed by the thought of his beloved.<\/li>\n<li>Nothing forbids one woman being loved by two men or one man by two women.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"university\"><strong>The Medieval University<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first universities in Europe were established by Christian monks. The University of Bologna (Universit\u00e0 di Bologna), Italy, which was founded in 1088, is generally considered to be the first university. While contemporary universities and colleges are different, today, they are still\u2014on a fundamental level\u2014medieval in mission and vision.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cyberspacerobinson.org\/honors-colloquium-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/450952402_10160366846358014_4707872748693929535_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"558\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"tropes\"><strong>Medieval Tropes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A\u00a0<em>trope<\/em>\u00a0is a figurative use of a word or image. It can also be a\u00a0<em>theme<\/em>\u00a0(an dominating idea or feeling) or a\u00a0<em>motif<\/em>\u00a0(something that repeatedly appears). William Henry Morgan, an immigrant from Wales. Col. Morgan was the president and principal owner of The Morgan Engineering Company which was founded by his father, Thomas Rees Morgan. This castle was built in in Alliance, Ohio, in 1904: Col. Morgan was a man of unusual and varied talents\u2014an electrical engineer, inventor, and a lover of literature, art and music. He was also known as a man who rarely did anything on a small scale! Glamorgan Castle is the original design of architect Willard Hirsh. According to Cherokee lore, the wall was built by the \u201cMoon-eyed people\u201d (light skinned people, who saw better during the night than the day, which suggests that they were northern Europeans).\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travellerselixir.com\/georgia-dreamy-castles-road-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia has several castles<\/a><\/strong>. Anyone up for a field trip?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"medievalism\"><strong>Understanding Medievalism(s)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Medieval literature has inspired a great number of fantasy novels, films, music, theatre, video games, and live action role-playing (from Dungeon and Dragons to LARPs). The study of medievalism in this sense is the study of how medieval times continue to exist since the Middle Ages. What does it mean that so many people are so fascinated by the medieval?<\/p>\n<p>The scholarly journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boydellandbrewer.com\/search-results\/?keyword=karl+fugelso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Studies in Medievalism<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was founded upon this interest by Leslie J. Workman and Kathleen Verduin, who also founded the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medievalisms.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Society for the Study of Medievalism<\/a>\u00a0was founded (in the early 1980s), it was a scandal. Such studies were not considered to be\u00a0<em>true<\/em>\u00a0medieval studies. However, well established scholars in both Europe and North America pressed forward to demonstrate the validity of such studies. The Italian scholar\/novelist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Umberto_Eco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Umberto Eco<\/a>\u00a0was among the first to publish analyses of medievalism in contemporary times, as was J. R. R. Tolkien and Old English literature scholar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Shippey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Shippey<\/a>. Since the 1970s, there has been a growing faction of medieval scholars who have asked deeper and deeper questions relevant to this topic. The scholarly journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boydellandbrewer.com\/search-results\/?keyword=karl+fugelso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Studies in Medievalism<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was one of the first publications to address this phenomenon, and it was\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-556 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cyberspacerobinson.org\/ENG34001\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/greatwall-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/>the first scholarly journal published in English. In 2010, another scholarly journal was started,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/journal\/41280\/volumes-and-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">postmedieval: a journal of medieval cultural studies<\/a>\u2014it serves as a more eclectic collection of thoughts about how we view medieval times. Because of this questioning, the canon of what we teach students\u2014not to mention how we teach it\u2014has changed.\u00a0 There seems to have developed a binary division between conservative medieval scholars (traditionalists) and liberal medieval scholars (the ones making all the questions). Social media has allowed these discussions to become more public\u2014ranging from healthy debates to passionate fighting words (and even more hateful acts).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_122\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cyberspacerobinson.org\/honors-colloquium-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/970d9be9-armor.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"932\" height=\"470\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong><em>Look at the price! Look at the price!<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>SOURCE: Ebay (2013)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>Medievalism:\u00a0<\/b>The lines between Ancient Times, the Middle Ages, and Modern Times are fuzzy. In truth, there has never been a complete breach with medieval ideas and institutions. Medievalism is the remnants of medieval values and thought. Below are some basic definitions that I wrote for the (now defunct)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/medievalelectronicmultimedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medieval Electronic Multimedia Organization<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"style1\"><strong>Medievalism:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cMedievalism is the study of responses to the Middle Ages at all periods since a sense of the mediaeval began to develop. Such responses include, but are not restricted to, the activities of scholars, historians and philologists in rediscovering medieval materials; the ways in which such materials were and are used by political groups intent on self-definition or self-legitimation; and artistic creations, whether literary, visual or musical, based on whatever has been or is thought to have been recovered from the medieval centuries. The Middle Ages remain present, moreover, in the modern consciousness, both through scholarship and through popular media such as film, video games, poster art, TV series and comic strips, and these media are also a legitimate object of study, if often intertwined with more traditionally scholarly topics.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"style1\">(Tom Shippey,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/medievalisms.org\/studies-in-medievalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies in Medievalism<\/a><\/em>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Modernist Medievalism:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Experimental contemporary \u201cmedievalist\u201d narratives that contain stereotyped medieval characterizations and plots infused with an awareness, exploration and elevation of individual unconsciousness and consciousness: medieval romances, for example, with psychological depth. The values in such works are Modernist (full of angst and a sense of the futile) combated by an idealized \u201chappy\u201d and\/or more \u201csimple\u201d life of the Middle Ages. They are fictions that imply historical discontinuity, rejecting traditional values and assumptions.\u00a0<strong><em>Post-publication Revision:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Experimental medievalist fictions that imply historical discontinuity, rejecting traditional values and assumptions; rewritten medieval values and assumptions into new values and assumptions, but framed within symbolic antiquities associated with the Middle Ages. Full of angst and a sense of futility, an infusion of what we perceive to be medieval characterization, plot, and fantasy with an awareness, exploration and elevation of the individual unconsciousness and consciousness. Such works may contain, for example, contemporary \u201cmedieval\u201d narratives that contain stereotyped medieval characterizations and plots infused with an awareness, exploration and elevation of individual unconsciousness and consciousness: medieval romances, for example, with psychological depth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Postmodern Medievalism:<\/strong>\u00a0More \u201cmedieval\u201d than Modern Medievalism in that they are contemporary \u201cmedieval\u201d narratives that recognize an inability to understand the past any more than one can understand the future. Thus, they are more authentic to medieval values and assumptions in that they recognize the infiltration of modernist ideology and reject it. Fragments of a fragmented history, a synergism of histories, seamless and constantly changing histories that strike us as \u201cmedieval.\u201d\u00a0<strong><em>Post-publication Revision:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0More \u201cmedieval\u201d than Modernist Medievalism in that it is more critical of contemporary perspectives of medieval values and societal codes, these narratives are overtly constructed and synergized fragments of a fragmented history, seamless and constantly changing in perceptions and interpretations of the medieval without idealizing these changes and perceptions. Thus, they are often less comprehensive: fragments of a fragmented history, a synergism of histories, seamless and constantly changing histories that strike us as \u201cmedieval\u201d\u2014whether or not they truly are medieval in nature. A recognition that we don\u2019t really know the past any more than we know the future (much less the current zeitgeist). In other words, contemporary \u201cmedieval\u201d narratives that recognize an inability to understand the past any more than one can understand the future. Because they are often self-reflexive, such narratives may be more authentic to medieval values and assumptions in that they recognize the infiltration of modernist ideology and reject it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neomedievalism:\u00a0<\/strong>Involves contemporary \u201cmedieval\u201d narratives that purport to merge (or even replace) reality as much as possible. There is no longer a sense of the futile and is thus more playful and in greater denial of reality. Neomedievalism engages alternative realities of the Middle Ages, generating the illusion into which one may escape or even interact with and control\u2014be it through a movie or a video game. Already fragmented histories are purposed as further fragmented, destroyed and<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-127 \" src=\"https:\/\/cyberspacerobinson.org\/honors-colloquium-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/00wafflehouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"338\" \/>\u00a0rebuilt to suit whimsical fancy, particularly in video games, where the illusion of control is most complete. Surrealism becomes less of a fantasy or nightmare and more of an illusion of reality that might even be controlled. The idea of the contemporary person existing in the Middle Ages, such as Mark Twain\u2019s Sir Boss (<em>A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur\u2019s Court<\/em>) is no longer an absurdity, or rather, it is no less absurd than the idea of fantasizing and even reliving the Middle Ages. It is a seriously gleeful embrace of the absurd.\u00a0<strong><em>Post-publication Revision:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Neomedievalism is a neologism that was first popularized by Italian medievalist Umberto Eco in his 1973 essay \u201cDreaming in the Middle Ages,\u201d (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/travelsinhyperre00ecou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travels in Hyper Reality<\/a><\/em>) and has been used in a variety of ways since.<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/unicorn-castle.org\/earlybritlit\/lesson-the-lenses-we-look-through-medievalism\/the-european-medieval-world-medievalism\/#note1\">\u00b9<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Angst becomes aggression. Histories are purposely fragmented. The illusion of control is made through changes of the illusion, rather than attempted changes of reality. There is no longer a sense of the futile, or at least it is second-staged by an illusionary sense of power and a denial of reality. Medieval concepts and values are purposely rewritten as a consious vision of an alternative universe (a fantasy of the medieval that is created with forethought). Furthermore, this vision lacks the nostalgia of earlier medievalisms in that it denies history. Contemporary values (feminism, gay rights, modern technolgical warfare tactics, democracy, capitalism, \u2026) dominate and rewrite the traditional perceptions of the European Middle Ages, even infusing other medieval cultures, such as that of Japan. Neomedievalist stories are contemporary \u201cmedieval\u201d narratives that purport to merge (or even replace) reality as much as possible; compared to postmodernist and modernist medievalisms, they are more playful and in greater denial of reality.<\/p>\n<p>Medievalism(s) permeate American society. This might be because the United States has no authentic European medieval past and so cherishes it a bit more than European counties. Perhaps. As a part of its justification for slavery, leaders of the American South cited feudalism as better form of rule, and similar ideas continue to exist right up to today; as medical doctor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.concordmonitor.com\/My-Turn-The-Medieval-Promise-of-Project-2025-57493985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert S. When Umberto Eco uses the term in the 1970s, for example, he really means the general definition of\u00a0<em>medievalism<\/em>. When\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/medievalelectronicmultimedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medieval Electronic Multimedia Organization<\/a>\u00a0used the term, the organization re-invented\/rewrote its meaning. That definition was first declared in 2003, but Pamela Clements and I wrote a deeper exploration of the term in an article, \u201cLiving with Neomedievalism\u201d,\u00a0 for\u00a0<em>Studies in Medievalism<\/em>\u00a0in 2009. There was a lot of argument (ranging from healthy debate to threats of fist-fights) over the meanings of\u00a0<em>medievalism<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>neomedievalism<\/em>\u00a0that is reflected in several volumes of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/series\/studies-in-medievalism\/8F65F9AC1150E95EF43915D5F7CA0BCC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies in Medievalism<\/a><\/em>. Meanwhile, in 2012, Pam and I co-edited the book of essays\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1RRlXvylNgs28xqHR1LICjCxRWeBGTa0M?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neomedievalism in the Media: Essays on Film, Television, and Electronic Games<\/a><\/em>. At around the same time, in 2007, Bruce Holsinger used the term in his book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/neomedievalismne0000hols\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neomedievalism, Neoconservatism, and the War on Terror<\/a><\/em>, based upon the writings of Hedly Bull.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Neomedievalism<\/em>\u00a0is also a term used in political theory, and was first discussed in 1977 by theorist Hedly Bull in\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/edisciplinas.usp.br\/pluginfile.php\/4034174\/mod_resource\/content\/1\/Hedley%20Bull-The%20Anarchical%20Society_%20A%20Study%20of%20Order%20in%20World%20Politics%20%20-Palgrave%20Macmillan%20%282002%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Anarchial Society: A Study of Order in World Politics<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(pg. 254-55).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Carol L.
